Mixing it Up with Business and Education
Local teachers and counselors from the Henry County and Martinsville schools and Carlisle School are taking part in a new program - The Modern Industry eXchange (The MIX). The program provides educators an opportunity to tour several modern industries to gain a better understanding of the employer needs and career opportunities. The pilot group of 24 teachers had their first tours in October and November 2014 with RTI International Metals, Eastman Chemical, Faneuil Inc., and Solid Stone Fabrics.
According to Paula Warner, a computer science teacher at Carlisle School, “the MIX shows the need to prepare students for the skills they will need in a high-tech environment.” Denise Hardy, a counselor at Martinsville High School, says the MIX industry tours are helpful to her as she talks to students about careers and employment options in the local community.
The MIX is offered through a partnership between the schools, the Martinsville-Henry County Economic Development Corp., and the Harvest Foundation. Goals of the program are to facilitate communication and connections between education and business, and to expose educators to local modern industry environments.
