Rural communities have long looked to urban markets for a variety of economic opportunities. While in recent years many of those opportunities have gone overseas, security concerns, gradually rising labor costs abroad, and intense efforts at upgrading telecommunications infrastructure in rural areas of the United States have many businesses weighing domestic outsourcing.
Recognizing this opportunity, the Martinsville-Henry County Economic Development Corporation is developing two strategic partnerships:
- The Economic Development Studio at Virginia Tech will examine opportunities and challenges involved in bringing these jobs to the region. They will also look to build on the unique strengths of the locality to help develop a more sustainable economy.
- The Martinsville-Henry County Economic Development Corporation is working closely with the Virginia Economic Development Partnership in forming a comprehensive back office operations (distributed services) marketing strategy. This study is currently underway, and upon completion will highlight the following solution offerings:
Continuity of Operations (COOP)/Disaster Recovery (DR)
· COOP/DR planning and implementation support
· Facilities and infrastructure to support COOP/DR operations
· Tailored programs targeted to information assurance and security based on existing university programs
Business Process Outsourcing (BPO)
· Facilities, infrastructure and low cost labor to support transaction-intensive back office processes - F+A, HR, industry specific
· BPO transition planning and implementation support
· Specially designed training programs
Data Storage, Digitization, Retrieval
· State and local community understand the needs of and can assist in planning for start-ups
· Facilities and infrastructure to support start-up operations
· Tailored programs targeted to information assurance and security based on existing university programs
